My goodness, there are so many skincare trends around at the moment, aren't there? I don't know about you, but my social feeds are inundated with them at the moment! The chances are, you may have already come across microneedling treatments through your social feeds or the media. Certainly, from beauty influencers to dermatologists, everyone is talking about this rejuvenating procedure that promises smoother, firmer and more radiant skin, without the need for surgery or downtime. Or, maybe you've just stumbled on this blog and felt a little bit curious about the topic?

Well, I'm going to shed some light on microneedling treatments. I'll explain exactly what microneedling is, how it works and whether it is right for you or not. Let's dive in and explore why so many people (myself included) are absolutely loving the results.

What are Microneedling Treatments?

Microneedling treatments might sound a bit scary to some, it's the word 'needle' isn't it? However, there is nothing to be afraid of. Microneedling, sometimes called collagen induction therapy, is a non-invasive skin rejuvenation procedure that uses extremely fine, sterile needles to create controlled micro-injuries on the surface of the skin. I know, I promised you that it wasn't scary, and trust me, it isn't. The process is very gentle and carefully controlled by a trained professional, like myself here at Lady MakeUp.

These minuscule 'pinpricks' trigger your body's natural wound-healing process, stimulating the production of collagen and elastin. These are the proteins responsible for keeping your skin plump, firm and youthful looking. As your skin heals, it becomes smoother, fresher and more even in tone and texture.

There have been many clinical studies into microneedling. The Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology published the findings of a trial on 48 candidates in 2018. They each received 4 treatments at 4-week intervals. The results demonstrated 'significantly improved lines, wrinkles, skin laxity and skin texture.'

Likewise, the British College of Aesthetic Medicine reports that, 'microneedling is often a more effective treatment than dermabrasion, chemical peels, and laser resurfacing.'

How Does Microneedling Work?

Professionals use a Dermapen or microneedling pen equipped with sterile, single-use needles to perform microneedling treatments. The device glides gently over your skin to create thousands of evenly spaced micro-channels at a controlled depth.

These micro-injuries kickstart three biological processes:

  1. Inflammation - Your immune system responds by sending nutrients and immune cells to the affected areas.

  2. Proliferation - New skin cells, collagen and elastin begin to form.

  3. Remodelling - Fresh tissue replaces older, damaged skin, leading to a firmer, rejuvenated look.

A 2024 clinical review about Microneedling treatments for acne (you can read here on MDPI) states, ' It also enhances the absorption of topical skincare products, making them more effective in treating acne and promoting overall skin health.'

What Can Microneedling Help With?

Microneedling is fantastic and so versatile. This is one of the reasons it has become so popular with modern skincare clinics. It can effectively address the following skin issues:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles

  • Acne scars and stretch marks

  • Uneven skin tone and hyperpigmentation

  • Large pores and rough texture

  • Dull or tired-looking skin

  • Early signs of ageing

Additionally, it can be used anywhere on the body. So, whether you are looking to improve acne or scarred skin, or you want to reduce the signs of ageing by restoring a youthful radiance, microneedling treatments are great and can be tailored to your individual needs and goals.

Can Anyone Have Microneedling Done?

Microneedling treatments are very inclusive. Most can safely benefit. This includes darker complexions that are often more sensitive to more aggressive treatments like chemical peels or laser resurfacing.

Microneedling is ideal for you if:

  • You want smoother, firmer, brighter skin.

  • You have mild to moderate acne scarring.

  • You’re dealing with uneven texture or pigmentation.

  • You’re seeking a natural collagen boost without injectables.

However, an important point of caution. If you have active acne, eczema, or rosacea flare-ups or certain skin infections, it may not be suitable. During your consultation at Lady MakeUp, I'll assess your skin to make sure microneedling is right for you. Every client gets their own customised treatment plan.

What Are The pros and Cons of Microneedling Treatments?

Every skin treatment has pros and cons, and microneedling is no different. Here's a balanced look so you can make an informed decision if this is the right treatment for you.

Pros:

  • Stimulates natural collagen and elastin production

  • Improves texture, tone, and firmness

  • Reduces scars, fine lines, and enlarged pores

  • Enhances absorption of serums and skincare products

  • Minimal downtime compared to more invasive treatments

  • Safe for most skin types and tones

Cons:

  • Temporary redness and sensitivity - Your skin may look flushed for 24-48 hours after treatment

  • Mild peeling or dryness - as skin renews, it can temporarily feel tight or flaky

  • Multiple sessions needed - for best results, you require a series of 3-6 treatments

  • Must be performed by a qualified professional - home rollers or untrained providers can cause damage or infection.

What to Expect during and after Microneedling Treatments

When you book in with me for microneedling treatments, we start with a thorough skin consultation. Once I have established your suitability for the procedure, we cleanse, tone and add a peel to the skin to prepare it. I then add Hyaluronic Acid and a cocktail of skin serums packed with nutrients and vitamins. You'll likely feel a gentle vibration or light pressure on the area being treated. Many of my clients describe it as a 'tickly' or 'tingly' sensation, rather than painful. Afterwards, I apply a mask and an SPF for protection.

The treatment itself usually takes about an hour. Afterwards, your skin might look pink, similar to mild sunburn, but, as mentioned earlier, this fades within a day or two. Within a week, you'll start to notice a healthy glow and smoother texture. Your results will improve continually with each treatment as new collagen develops over time.

To support your results, I'll recommend a tailored post-treatment skincare routine. This may include hydrating serums and sun protection.

Why Do I need more than One Treatment?

While you are likely to see improvements after just one session, microneedling treatments work best as a series. Most clients benefit from 3-6 sessions spaced out about 4-6 weeks apart. This allows the skin time to fully rebuild collagen between treatments for longer lasting results.

Maintenance treatments every few months can help preserve your glow and keep your skin feeling smooth and supple.
